The holiday season presents a great opportunity to enhance your child's (or your own) musical experience with inexpensive but useful accessories.

First make sure they have the necessities like a tuner, metronome and music stand.

A guitar stand or a new cord is always useful.

Stocking up on expendables like picks and strings is good too. lscgid: execve():/home/baldon/beadgame.net/www/cgi-bin/gs_showStoreItems.pl: No such file or directory

Depending on their wants and needs a slide or capo might be appreciated.

Since a slide needs to fit right, it is best bought in person at a store.

Since we are what we eat, tickets to a concert could be a lot of fun although it's a bit more spendy than most of these things. Don't forget the earplugs.

There's always the old standby, CD's. Why not give them something a little different than their usual fare. Let them taste some blues or jazz. Classical, country, world beat or Balinese gamelan music. It's all good.

Let's talk books. There are lots of great songbooks out there. Be aware that songbooks labeled "Piano, Vocal, Guitar" are NOT guitar books. They are piano books with guitar chords. Often songs are not in the original keys and don't include the original guitar parts. Avoid them. Actual guitar songbooks will usually include "TAB", short for tablature.

Please don't give students chord books, chord charts or chord cards. I have my own method of teaching chords and they would be a distraction at best.

Of course, in a pinch, a gift card is quick and easy.

My personal favorite is a copy of my recent album, "Second Hand Smoke" or The Troubleboys, "Blues All Over" both of which are available HERE. For my current and former students and High School classmates only, "Second Hand Smoke" is available for a special price. Contact me if you qualify.

I hope this is helpful. There will be periodic updates so bookmark this page and check back. By the way, it will also work for birthdays, bar mitzvahs, anniversaries and other occasions.
Thanks,
John
