3) What You Need:

Beyond a playable instrument with a case or "gig-bag" and, if electric, an amplifier and cord, students will need the following:

Immediately:

  • All Students:
    • A well lit, relatively private practice space with a straight backed chair.
    • Music stand. An inexpensive wire stand will work. You may wish to upgrade to an "Orchestra" style stand at a later date.
    • 8 1/2 x 11 Spiral bound notebook dedicated to guitar lessons
    • Electronic Tuner. I recommend the KORG GA-30. (The silver one, not black CA-30)
    • Picks. Medium or Light. Tortex or Nylon is easiest to grip. Small children may prefer the smaller "jazz" picks. Buy a selection of different styles. The student will develop their own preference.
  • Beginners:
    • Hal Leonard Guitar Method - Book 1 by Will Schmid/Greg Koch
    • Mel Bay's Guitar Technic by Roger Filiberto (Mel Bay)
  • Intermediate/Advanced:
    • Books will be determined after we meet

Soon:

  • All Students:
    • Metronome. It should be loud!
    • Spare set of strings. I use D’addario and Ernie Ball.
    • String Winder
    • Ear Plugs (see "WARNING" sheet)

Eventually:

  • All Students:
    • Book of staff (music) paper. I like the half size with wide spaced staff. Hal Leonard #HL00210004; 8 1/2 x 8 1/2 wide staff includes a brief notation guide. Any staff paper will do.
    • More books
    • A Capo
    • A Slide
    • A bigger amplifier
    • Another guitar
    • Endless doodads and gizmos!

Most of these items are available at my online store GuitarSlinger Store
